One of the key ingredients of cooking with cannabis is marijuana butter. Also known as “cannabutter,” this dairy derivative works much like regular butter but is, of course, infused with a little bit of leaf or bud. In fact, that’s one of the major benefits of marijuana butter: you can use the leaf of the cannabis plant. This ensures that none of the plant really goes to waste, and you’ll still get a pretty decent product from the cannabis butter. Of course, if you want to use leaves, the ones that have the maximum THC content are generally going to be the small leaves closest to the flower.
Under normal circumstances, the main way to ensure that the THC remains active is by heating it. You generally get this done by smoking it, but cooking also gets it hot. The cannabis will definitely heat up when it is included with the butter, and the preparation technique is almost instantaneously warm. To make cannabutter, you’ll need:

The type of butter that you use is basically irrelevant, but you’re probably going to want to get the butter from actual sticks of butter (instead of spread). To start the process, you’ll want to heat the butter and water together in a sauce pan of any size. Mix in the ground marijuana product to the butter and water mixture. Be sure to stir it in thoroughly enough so that the marijuana is spread out evenly.
Allow the mixture to simmer for around 30 minutes while stirring every so often. Letting the mixture simmer for too long can end up damaging the cannabis while letting it simmer for too short of a time period might not activate the THC adequately. To remove the marijuana, pour the mixture through the strainer and into another pan so you don’t lose any of the butter. You don’t actually want solid marijuana to be in the butter when all’s said and done.
After that, take the pan that the butter and water mixture is in, and place it in the refrigerator. The butter will solidify on top of the water, and you can just discard the water when you’re done. At that point, you’ll have relatively potent marijuana butter that you can use for a wide variety of recipes. Even though there is no solid marijuana in the butter, the THC residue will have resolved in the fat while the mixture was simmering. You can basically use this cannabutter in any recipe that calls for butter. You can even just use it to spread on your toast for breakfast in the morning. It’s really up to you.
