I have a very comfy four cow tie stall barn here in VT. This summer I bought a Jersey that was raised in loose housing. Now that winter has finally arrived my cows stay in the barn at night. My new cow had two problems with my barn. First the curb was too high which restricted her ability get up and she was bruising her brisket. Luckily the curb is wood so I was able to cut it down. Now she can get up just fine. My second problem is she doesn't know how to use a water bowl. My water bowls have stems instead of paddles and she just can't figure out how to use it. I have to hold it open so she can drink when she is in the barn. Fortunately I have a run in shed with a feeder and water tub so I can let the cows out for a few hours every day regardless of the weather, so she drink her fill then. But even so I have to operate the water bowl for her at least twice a day when I milk. Any suggestions besides swapping out the water bowl with one with a paddle? Thanks!
